Are Tiny Houses Worth It?

Are you thinking about moving into or building your own tiny home? Are you tired of living a “normal” lifestyle?

Pros of Tiny Houses

Living in a tiny house can have a lot of upsides to it. Whether you want to reduce expenses or be location-independent, building a tiny home may be worth it for you!

Reduce Living Expenses

It’s pretty obvious that when you downsize, you’ll be saving living costs. However, with tiny homes, you’re cutting costs in more ways than one.

The price of the home will be less than that of a normal size home. An average home costs about $290,000, while the price of a tiny home ranges between $10,000 to $40,000 depending on the complexity of electricity and other larger costs associated with a build.

You’ll also be looking at a lot less money spent on utilities. Even better? Utilizing solar power in your home will cut your expenses even further.

It’s easy to fit a tiny house for solar to save on your energy bill.

Go Everywhere

One of the surprising things you may not know about a tiny house is that you can pick it up and go whenever you want.

Since tiny houses are built on trailers, if you choose to change locations, you can just put it back on the trailer and drive the home to where you want to be. This gives you the freedom to choose your location at any point, making you more location independent than you otherwise would be as a large homeowner.

If you are a travel lover and are always dreaming of new places, living in a tiny home could be your dream.

Less Cleaning

Think about it. If you have less space, there’s fewer things you need to clean! You can spend more time adventuring and doing what you love since you won’t have to spend a ton of time cleaning your space.

You’ll also be saving money on cleaning supplies since you will need less over time.

DIY Build

One of the most exciting parts of your tiny house plans is that you can do it yourself if you choose. And if you choose not to do it yourself, you can easily come up with your house specifications.

Cons of Tiny Houses

Just like there are pros to living in a tiny home, there are also disadvantages and challenges that you may face when you move into or build a tiny home.

No Room for Expansion

If you’re moving into a tiny home, you need to realize that there is no room to expand your family. With limited space, there are only so many bodies that can fit inside the home.

it’s best to move into a tiny home only if you have already had your kids and they are out of the house, or if you don’t plan on having any time soon!

You also cannot host any guests in your space. You would have to build an extra tiny home just for company.

Tougher Lifestyle

A tiny home is going to give you a minimalistic lifestyle. Although that’s great in some capacities, you’ll also be doing things a lot differently than if you lived in a normal home.

You’ll have to do your laundry a bit differently. You may only have a washer and will need to line dry your clothes.

Your toilet will be hooked up differently because your home is portable at times. If you have a compost toilet, you will have to change out the compost every month or two and get rid of the waste. In a “normal” home, you would not have to do this.

Another part of tiny homes that you’ll have to learn to adapt to is that your furniture may be different than what you would expect from a bed or couch. You may have to fold up your bed during the day to make a couch. Your table may have to come out of the wall to save space, so you’ll constantly be putting it up and down.

This may not bother you, so you would do great with tiny house living! But it’s important to know what kind of lifestyle you’ll be living before you make the choice to build a tiny home.

Your Tiny House May Not Be Allowed

You may have not thought about this, but tiny homes are not allowed everywhere. For your original build, you’ll have to check your local ordinances to be sure you are allowed there.

From there, if you choose to move your tiny home to another location, you’ll have to check with the new local ordinances as well to make sure you can move your home to that location legally.
